Moldova's referendum on joining the European Union has unfolded amid allegations of significant interference by Russia and its affiliates, an EU spokesperson stated on Monday.

A narrow majority of 50.17% voted in favor during Sunday's referendum to embed EU membership as a constitutional goal. With less than 1.5% of ballots remaining to be counted, President Maia Sandu, also vying for re-election, envisions Moldova joining the EU by 2030.

"The vote, orchestrated under remarkable interference and intimidation by Russia, aims to destabilize Moldova's democratic processes," remarked Peter Stano, the EU spokesperson. Despite Russia's denial of such meddling, the Kremlin labeled Moldova's voting process as "unfree" on Monday. The referendum and concurrent presidential election are crucial tests to see if the former Soviet republic can break free from Moscow's influence. Moldovan authorities accused fugitives like Ilan Shor of meddling and spreading disinformation during the process, highlighting ongoing efforts by Russia and its contiguities to disrupt democratic norms.
