The Moldovan referendum on joining the European Union has taken a significant turn, with pro-EU supporters holding a narrow lead. Nearly 99% of the votes have been tabulated, revealing the 'Yes' vote slightly ahead with 50.18%, as per data from the Central Electoral Commission.

President Maia Sandu has strongly condemned purported machinations by criminal organizations allegedly backed by hostile foreign powers. Sandu alleges these groups attempted to manipulate the democratic process through vote-buying and misinformation campaigns, posing a severe threat to Moldova's national interests and stability.

The referendum's results could be pivotal for Moldova's trajectory, coinciding with a presidential election wherein Sandu leads against Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor with a Russia-friendly stance, ahead of the November 3 runoff.
