Moldova on the Brink: EU Membership Vote Amid Russian Tensions
During a visit to Chisinau, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged Moldovans to vote in an important referendum on joining the EU. This comes as tensions with Russia increase, and the country simultaneously holds presidential elections. Moldova's relations with Russia have strained as it leans closer to the EU.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on Moldovan citizens to participate in a crucial October 20 referendum to decide the nation’s future with the European Union. During her visit to Chisinau, von der Leyen met with pro-Western President Maia Sandu to discuss Moldova’s pathway to EU membership.
The referendum coincides with a significant presidential election, as Sandu seeks re-election amidst accusations of Russian interference. Moldovan authorities allege such interference is aimed at swaying the country’s direction, a claim Moscow firmly denies. Speaking to reporters, von der Leyen emphasized the referendum as a chance for Moldovans to exercise their sovereign right to choose their nation’s path.
As Moldova's pro-EU sentiment grows, the country looks to strengthen its European ties, particularly as President Sandu champions the cause amid deteriorating relations with Moscow. Moldova has already initiated formal EU accession talks, with hopes to join by 2030. Current polls suggest strong local support for EU membership.
