The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) staged a protest on Thursday demanding the death penalty for Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the institution. Pramod Pandey of INTUC emphasized the urgency, citing Teacher's Day to underscore the call for immediate sentencing.

Dr Ghosh has since filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging a Calcutta High Court order that directed a CBI probe into corruption allegations against him. The petition is expected to be heard on September 6, presided over by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

The CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch arrested Dr Ghosh on September 2, following accusations of financial irregularities at the college. He is currently in an 8-day police custody. Meanwhile, West Bengal Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has appealed to the President and Union Home Minister to rescind prestigious medals awarded to Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal due to alleged misconduct during the investigation. Compounding the controversy, the victim's family accuses Kolkata Police of attempting to bribe them during their mourning.
