Doctors from B. R. Singh Hospital, Eastern Railway, conducted medical tests on Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical Hospital and College, and three others who were arrested. The Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) anti-corruption branch apprehended Dr. Ghosh and the others for alleged financial irregularities at the Medical College and Hospital.
The medical team departed late Monday night from the CBI's anti-corruption branch in West Bengal after completing the examinations. Dr. Ghosh is under investigation for alleged corruption and financial mismanagement following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBI to probe the matter. Alongside Dr. Ghosh, vendors Biplav Singha, Suman Hazar, and Dr. Ghosh's additional security, Afsar Ali, were also arrested.
Union State Minister Sukanta Majumdar commented on September 2, stating he had predicted Dr. Ghosh's arrest in the corruption case. Majumdar expressed doubts about Ghosh's arrest in a separate rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor but was certain about the corruption charges. He shared his views in a video message on the social media platform X, calling the arrest a people's demand in Bengal.
Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, an official FIR was registered by the CBI against Ghosh on August 24 regarding the corruption allegations. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata also suspended Dr. Sandip Ghosh's membership amid the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, junior doctors protested in Kolkata, demanding the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. One protestor told ANI, "Until the Commissioner of Police doesn't agree to meet us or resigns, we will protest day and night. We want to know what happened during the four days the Kolkata police had the case—how so much evidence tampering occurred."
