Trudeau Faces Political Turmoil as NDP Withdraws Support
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government faces uncertainty as the New Democratic Party withdraws its automatic support. Trudeau must now form new alliances to govern and survive confidence votes. Despite the setback, Trudeau pledged to continue prioritizing social programs while opposition leader Jagmeet Singh criticized his leadership.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suffered an unexpected blow on Wednesday when the small political party helping keep his minority Liberal government in power withdrew its automatic support, forcing him to strike new alliances to govern.
Dismissing talk of early elections after the left-leaning New Democratic Party pulled its backing, Trudeau vowed to continue governing and pushing through social programs. The move leaves him reliant on support from other opposition legislators to pass budgets and survive confidence votes.
In a video, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said he was "ripping up" a deal the two leaders struck in 2022 and accused Trudeau of failing to confront the opposition Conservatives effectively. Polls suggest the Conservatives would easily win an election required by October 2025. Singh criticized the Liberals for being too weak and too devoted to corporate interests to act in people's favor.
