Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed on Wednesday that the Uttarakhand government will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by November 9, the state's foundation day. Uttarakhand, initially named Uttaranchal, was formed from Uttar Pradesh on November 9, 2000, and renamed in 2007.
Dhami emphasized that this decision, unlike those of previous governments influenced by vote bank politics, would be implemented before the key date. "We have made crucial decisions not implemented by previous administrations. The UCC bill will soon be a reality," stated Dhami. He highlighted efforts to protect Devbhoomi's identity against religious conversion, ensuring its legacy for future generations.
The BJP government introduced the UCC Bill in a special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 6 this year, passing it with a majority on February 7. Dhami hailed the passage as a historic moment for the state.
The UCC aims to establish uniform personal laws for all citizens, covering areas such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession, free from religious, gender, or caste-based discrimination. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address, advocated for the UCC to eliminate religion-based discrimination nationwide.
PM Modi called for a country-wide discussion on the proposed UCC, inviting public suggestions. "The Supreme Court has repeatedly discussed the UCC and issued orders. Many believe that our current civil code is discriminatory," Modi noted. (ANI)
