Israel-Hezbollah Conflict Escalates with Intense Airstrikes and Rocket Fire
Israel initiated a series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon to pre-empt Hezbollah's planned attacks. The violent exchange, provoked by the killing of a top Hezbollah commander, risks igniting a broader regional war, with potential involvement from the US and Iran. Diplomatic efforts continue to seek a cease-fire.

Israel launched an intense wave of airstrikes across southern Lebanon early Sunday, claiming it as a pre-emptive strike against Hezbollah. The militant group retaliated by launching hundreds of rockets and drones, aiming to avenge the killing of a top commander last month.
This heavy bout of violence threatens to escalate into a regional conflict that could pull in the United States, Iran, and other militant groups. Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel has been in conflict with Hamas for over ten months, are also jeopardized. The Israeli military said Hezbollah was preparing a massive rocket and missile barrage against Israel.
In the meantime, diplomatic efforts continue as Egypt hosts new peace talks aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas war. US officials, including President Joe Biden, are closely monitoring the situation and engaging with Israeli counterparts to maintain regional stability.
