Offering a vision of unity for the country, Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday articulated her commitment to becoming a president who represents all Americans, not just any single faction or party.

Harris, at 59, marks a historic moment as the first Indian-American and Black woman nominated by either the Democratic or Republican parties for the presidential election.

In an excerpt from her nomination acceptance speech, Harris emphasized, ''With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past. I promise to be a president for all Americans,'' addressing viewers of various political beliefs.

Reflecting on her life's work, Harris stated, ''I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations. A president who leads -- and listens. Who is realistic, practical, and has common sense. From courthouse to the White House, that has been my life's work.''

Sharing a poignant memory from high school, Harris discussed how a friend confided in her about being sexually abused. This incident fueled her dedication to becoming a prosecutor to protect individuals like her friend. ''That is one of the reasons I became a prosecutor. To protect people like Wanda,'' Harris said.
