In a controversial ruling, Venezuela's Supreme Court backed President Nicolas Maduro's win in last month's election. This comes despite online tallies indicating a landslide loss.

The high court, known for its loyalty to Maduro, has rarely opposed the government. Its Thursday ruling followed Maduro's appeal for a vote review.

The opposition had earlier published voting records from 80% of polling stations, suggesting opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won by a more than 2-to-1 margin. The court dismissed these records as forged.
