China on Thursday lodged a serious protest with the US following a meeting between a top Biden administration official and the Dalai Lama. The official reiterated Washington's commitment to advancing human rights for Tibetans and preserving their heritage.

The 89-year-old Dalai Lama is currently recuperating in New York after successful knee replacement surgery. Uzra Zeya, the US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, conveyed Biden's message of support during her audience with the Tibetan spiritual leader.

Reacting to the meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning labeled the Dalai Lama as a political exile involved in anti-China activities. She stated that China opposes any country allowing visits by the Dalai Lama and meeting him in any form, urging the US to respect China's core interests and concerns.
