Assam Tensions: Clashes Erupt Over Eviction Drive Resulting in Fatalities
Two protesters were killed and numerous others injured in clashes with police during an eviction drive in Assam's Kamrup district. The situation escalated after Congress opposition, leading to attacks on officials and subsequent firing by police. The government insists eviction proceedings will continue, aiming to clear encroached land.

Two protesters lost their lives and 11 others sustained injuries in police firing during an eviction operation in Assam's Kamrup (Metropolitan) district on Thursday, a high-ranking police official reported.
The clash occurred as a mob attacked 22 police officers and a government official, forcing police to open fire.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the situation escalated following opposition from Congress, which prompted encroachers to attack government personnel.
Despite the violence, Sarma confirmed that the eviction of unauthorized land occupants will proceed.
Director General of Police G P Singh said on platform X that the authorities have been evicting illegal structures from government land in the Sonapur Revenue Circle.
In this process, 248 bighas of land were cleared, removing 237 illegal structures.
Officials faced violent resistance, including attacks with sharp weapons and stone-pelting, causing grievous injuries to the police.
In response, police used authorized force, leading to injuries among 13 individuals and the deaths of two at the hospital.
Guwahati Police have been tasked with identifying and apprehending all individuals involved in the attack.
Investigations into the conspiracy behind these attacks are underway, along with ensuring proper medical care for the injured.
Extra security forces have been deployed to the tense area to maintain order.
