Modi's Balance: Diplomacy Between Moscow and Kyiv
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share perspectives on the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine-Russia conflict during his visit to Kyiv. This marks the first trip to Ukraine by an Indian PM in over three decades. The visit is seen as a strategic balancing act after Modi's recent trip to Moscow.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to discuss peaceful resolutions for the Ukraine-Russia conflict during his visit to Kyiv this week, a first for an Indian leader in over three decades. This visit comes on the heels of his recent contentious trip to Moscow.
Modi departed for Poland on Wednesday and will arrive in Kyiv on Friday. His trip to Moscow earlier in July faced criticism from the U.S. and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as it coincided with a deadly Russian strike on a children's hospital in Kyiv. Modi condemned the attack and emphasized India's hopes for peace and stability in the region.
Despite criticism, Indian diplomats claim that New Delhi's relationships with Russia and Ukraine are independent of each other. They also highlighted ongoing interactions across multiple sectors between India and Ukraine. Modi insists his visit aims at fostering peace, not taking sides in the conflict.
