In what is being hailed as a triumph for democratic processes, Congress women's wing chief Alka Lamba celebrated the announcement of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir. Lamba, who leads the All India Mahila Congress, noted that top party figures including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will commence their campaigns in the region come September.
The Election Commission unveiled the schedule for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls on Friday, locking in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1. Votes will be tallied on October 4. Lamba expressed that this development marks a significant return to democratic norms for the region after a prolonged wait.
Addressing the media, Lamba underscored the importance of these elections, stating that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will finally have the chance to elect their representatives and hopefully form a majority government. She added that the Mahila Congress has already initiated its campaign to tackle pressing issues like unemployment, inflation, and poverty. The leadership reshuffle within the Jammu and Kashmir Congress was also discussed, with Tariq Hameed Qarra replacing Vaqar Rasool Wani as JKPCC president.
