Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and DMK MP K.N. Arun Nehru engaged in a heated debate on the social media platform 'X' regarding the proposed metro project in Tamil Nadu's Trichy. Both Congress and DMK are key components of the INDIA bloc, which achieved sweeping success in Tamil Nadu during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In his initial post, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram stated, "Trichy doesn't need a metro. We need to end these grand unthinking projects. Focus on the basics." In response, DMK MP K.N. Arun Nehru countered, citing overwhelming local support for the metro to connect rural areas to Trichy city center, which is home to essential facilities including colleges, hospitals, and government offices. Nehru emphasized that modern infrastructure is critical to managing the city's rapid growth and urban density.

Chidambaram appreciated the public policy debate, highlighting his support for various infrastructure projects in Trichy. He questioned the financial viability of a metro in a smaller city like Trichy, referencing low ridership figures and financial losses in other Indian metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. He argued that other pressing needs in Trichy should take precedence and called for detailed public consultations and cost-benefit analyses for major projects.

Nehru responded by asserting that metro projects globally rarely turn a profit but significantly boost overall socioeconomic growth, reduce commute times, and alleviate city congestion. He underlined that without such infrastructure, cities like Chennai would face severe economic setbacks due to clogged roads.

Chidambaram further questioned whether a metro system is suitable for smaller cities, suggesting it might not be the only viable transportation solution. He stressed the importance of diverse views and public consultations in democratic decision-making.

Agreeing that metro systems need to be integrated with other transportation modes for maximum efficiency, Nehru highlighted the essential role of metro infrastructures in densely populated urban areas. He stated that metros utilize underground and overhead spaces, offering an efficient transportation solution without impacting crowded cityscapes.
