West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has criticized the state police over their handling of security during protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College on August 14. His criticism came after a women constable was injured during the demonstrations.
In a post on X, West Bengal police questioned, "Wasn't the night Shampa's too?" referring to Constable Shampa Pramanik who was injured while ensuring the safety of the protestors. The police noted that she was hit by a brick thrown from the crowd.
The police have arrested five people in connection with the incident and pledged to ensure their prosecution. Adhikari condemned the police and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asserting that the police force was inefficient and colluding with TMC goons. Additionally, questions were raised about the legality of the injured constable's deployment, who is allegedly still a trainee.
The unrest has sparked a nationwide doctors' strike from August 17 to 18 as a response to the trainee doctor's tragic death.
