Mexico Demands U.S. Halt Funding for Opposition NGOs
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador plans to send a diplomatic note to the U.S. regarding perceived interference through funding to opposition civil organizations, specifically highlighting the anti-corruption group Mexicanos Contra la Corrupcion y la Impunidad. He believes the funding undermines his administration.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced his intention to send a diplomatic note to the United States, expressing concern over U.S. donations to opposition civil organizations. The president raised this issue during a morning press conference on Wednesday.
Lopez Obrador specifically criticized U.S. funding for Mexicanos Contra la Corrupcion y la Impunidad, an anti-corruption NGO that has scrutinized his administration and former governments. He intends to address the matter directly with U.S. President Joe Biden.
The president argued that Biden might be misinformed about the nature of the funding, believing it supports efforts to combat corruption in Mexico when it allegedly serves to undermine his government. Last year, Lopez Obrador asked Biden to stop USAID from backing groups he accused of being part of a conservative movement against him.
