The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has initiated disciplinary measures against six officials implicated in the unauthorized use of cellphones at a Western Cape correctional facility. This announcement was made by DCS Minister, Dr. Pieter Groenewald, during a National Assembly session on Wednesday.

The disciplinary actions follow a viral video that surfaced in July, featuring an inmate at the Goodwood Correctional Centre boasting about the "soft life" in prison. The video prompted an internal investigation, leading to the identification of six officials involved in the breach.

"After a thorough investigation, the area commissioner of Goodwood decided to proceed with disciplinary actions against the six officials. Currently, all six have been formally charged, with two cases finalized and four still in process," Minister Groenewald reported.

In addressing the broader issue of cellphone usage in prisons, Minister Groenewald noted the challenges associated with blocking signals. He explained that while jamming technology could be employed, its proximity to highways and residential areas poses complications, potentially affecting nearby communities. The department is exploring more targeted and sophisticated technologies, although budget constraints remain a concern.

Minister Groenewald emphasized the importance of consequence management in eradicating corruption within the department. He underscored the need for collective action, stating, "The fight against corruption cannot be waged by a minister alone; it requires the collective effort of all members. While most correctional services officials are honest and hardworking, we must identify and discipline those who tarnish the department's reputation."

In his concluding remarks, the Minister reaffirmed his commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability among DCS officials.
