National Security Advisor Ajit Doval attended the state funeral for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong of Vietnam's Communist Party on Thursday, conveying India's condolences to Vietnam's leadership. The influential leader passed away on July 19 after a prolonged illness at age 80.

Doval personally extended India's sympathies to President To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and the grieving family. The Indian Embassy in Hanoi shared this on social media. Trong had been a dominant political figure in Vietnam since 2011, consolidating the Communist Party's power.

Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu expressed heartfelt condolences to President To Lam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the loss on social media, highlighting Trong's contributions to Vietnam and bilateral relations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Vietnamese Embassy in New Delhi to pay tribute. The Indian Parliament extended condolences, noting Trong's role in fostering India-Vietnam friendship.
