Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters has conveyed the Government's heartfelt condolences following the passing of Kīngi Tūheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII.
"It is with profound sadness that we learn of the passing of Kīngi Tūheitia. Our thoughts, sympathies, and prayers go out to the Kingitanga family and the Tainui people during this difficult time," said Mr. Peters.
Kīngi Tūheitia, who led the Kingitanga movement for over 18 years, was a respected figure in his community and provided steadfast leadership throughout his reign.
"The news of his passing is particularly poignant as it comes shortly after the Koroneihana celebrations at Turangawaewae," Mr. Peters added, acknowledging the recent gathering that honored the King's leadership.
The Government joins the Kingitanga family and the broader Tainui community in mourning the loss of a revered leader.
