The Legislative Assembly in Karnataka saw fiery clashes on Tuesday as the ruling Congress and opposition BJP debated the issues of Emergency and safeguarding the Constitution. The explosive discussions led to the House being adjourned after both parties accused each other of undermining democratic principles.
Tensions spiked when Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar made a remark that irked Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, who retaliated by criticizing Congress for their role during the 1975 Emergency. Heated exchanges ensued, with the BJP calling the Emergency a period of Constitutional abuse and Congress defending its historical leaders.
As the altercation deepened, Speaker U T Khader tried to mediate but faced backlash from BJP members for his comments on the Emergency. The disruption peaked when Congress MLA Rajegowda allegedly used a derogatory term, prompting the Speaker to suspend the session temporarily.
