In a groundbreaking effort to restore peace in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur, MLAs from the Meitei, Kuki, and Naga communities will convene today for the first time since ethnic violence erupted 17 months ago. The meeting, initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to reconcile differences and forge an amicable resolution to the ongoing strife.

Prominent figures expected to participate include Meitei Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, Kuki ministers Letpao Haokip and Nemcha Kipgen, and Naga MLAs like Ram Muivah. Notably absent will be Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh, despite the former's recent emphasis on dialogue between the conflicting communities for peace.

The violence, which began on May 3, last year following the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status, has resulted in the deaths of over 220 people. This meeting represents a crucial opportunity for dialogue and conflict resolution in a region deeply affected by ongoing ethnic tensions.
