The government has unveiled new regulations for the registration, incorporation, and management of co-operative societies in the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Promulgated by the Legislative Department in the Union Law Ministry on Monday, the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Co-operative Societies Regulation, 2024 supersedes the Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act, 1960 and the Gujarat Co-operative Societies Act, 1961, which were applicable to the former respective union territories.
This move comes after Parliament passed a bill in 2019 to merge the two union territories—Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli—into a single unit. The regulation mandates the appointment of a Registrar of co-operative societies along with additional officials to aid in administrative functions within the Union territory.
