Delhi Home Minister Kailash Gahlot has recommended the premature release of 14 convicts from city prisons.
A statement from the Delhi government said the recommendations were forwarded to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena for final approval following a Sentence Review Board (SRB) meeting held on February 23.
The meeting included key officials like the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Director General (Prison), Principal Secretary (Law), Principal District Judge, Special Commissioner of Police, and Director of Social Welfare, according to the statement.
Gahlot noted that the SRB assessed each case individually, balancing justice and rehabilitation. He said the early release aims to reintegrate reformed individuals into society and reduce the prison system's burden.
Gahlot added, "We believe in offering a second chance to those who have shown genuine remorse and improvement during their incarceration." Out of 92 cases reviewed, 14 were recommended for early release, the government said.
The proposal was initially submitted to the Lt Governor, returned for routing through the Chief Minister, and has now been sent again for final approval, it added.
