Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan underscored the principle of equality inherent in the Onam festival as he wished the people a happy Thiruvonam on Saturday. A statement from the Chief Minister's Office declared that Onam should inspire unity beyond discrimination. Vijayan also emphasized ongoing rehabilitation efforts in Wayanad following the July 30 landslides.

Vijayan noted that this year's Onam coincides with the aftermath of landslides in Mundakai and Chooralmala. He highlighted extensive initiatives aimed at rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and revitalizing the region both economically and socially. 'Let's show compassion for our brothers and sisters who've survived this calamity,' he said, urging donations to the relief fund for Wayanad's rehabilitation, where more than 200 lives were lost.

'May the essence of Onam, teaching that all human beings are equal, inspire us to uphold unity and transcend discrimination,' Vijayan added. Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan also sent festive greetings, celebrating Onam's message of love, equality, and harmony. He called on everyone to celebrate Onam's unity and amplify Kerala's message worldwide. Onam, marking the Vamana avatar of Vishnu and Emperor Mahabali's return, is a time of unity, harvest, and cultural festivities.

The festival, occurring in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam (overlapping with August-September), runs from September 6 to 15 this year. It honors farming efforts and includes activities like Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower Rangoli), various dances, martial arts, and the Sadya feast.
