Amid escalating tensions following the demand for the demolition of an 'unauthorised' mosque structure in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday called for peace and unity. Addressing media after an all-party meeting, Sukhu welcomed tourists and urged restraint.
'We appeal to maintain peace and brotherhood and welcome tourists,' said the chief minister. Joining him were state Congress chief Pratibha Singh, BJP leader Randhir Sharma, CPI(M) leader Rakesh Singha, AAP leader Surjit Singh, and others. The CM stressed no one should take the law into their own hands.
Referring to the protests by Hindu organizations demanding the demolition of an 'encroached' mosque structure, Sukhu highlighted that protests are intrinsic to the democratic fabric of Himachal Pradesh but must remain peaceful. He noted that leaders from various political backgrounds were products of student movements, signifying the state's culture of protest.
Sukhu appreciated the Muslim community's willingness to demolish parts of the mosque and reiterated that all unauthorised constructions would be dealt with strictly according to the law. He emphasized that no community's sentiments should be hurt and described the situation as stemming from a minor dispute between individuals, now exacerbated by local leaders.
