The West Bengal Cabinet has approved a proposal to set up five additional special POCSO courts, bringing the total to 67 in the state, according to Minister of State for Finance Chandrima Bhattacharya.

This decision comes in the wake of protests triggered by the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Bhattacharya stated that the move is designed to expedite the processing of child sexual abuse cases.

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, also directed that no other minister besides the Chief Minister would address the media concerning the RG Kar incident, as per a source within the secretariat.
