The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday apprehended Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with three other individuals, over their alleged involvement in financial misconduct at the institution, officials reported.
Shortly after Ghosh's arrest, CBI officers detained his security guard and two vendors linked to the hospital. This facility was notably the location where the body of a raped and murdered woman medic was discovered on August 9.
The Calcutta High Court had on August 23 directed the transfer of the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI. This directive followed a petition by Dr. Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of the facility, calling for a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into multiple allegations of financial misconduct during Ghosh's tenure.
