In a significant move, the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, along with three other individuals. The arrests stem from allegations of corruption and financial misconduct linked to the college and hospital, according to reports from ANI.
The investigation into Dr. Ghosh, which was directed by a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, has highlighted severe financial irregularities. Apart from Dr. Ghosh, two vendors, Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara, and Afsar Ali, Ghosh's additional security, have also been detained. An official FIR was registered by the CBI against Ghosh on August 24 following the High Court's orders.
Further developments saw Dr. Ghosh being brought to the CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch from its Special Crime Branch office amid the ongoing investigation. Notably, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata suspended Dr. Ghosh's membership amid the probe. Additionally, the CBI concluded a second round of polygraph tests on Ghosh regarding a separate investigation into the rape-murder of a woman doctor at the institution. The Calcutta High Court has mandated the CBI to submit a progress report by September 17.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court has ruled that the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be transferred to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) during the hearing of a suo motu case related to the incident. The investigation continues as the CBI delves deeper into the various allegations.
