A local court has handed down a life sentence to a 63-year-old man, identified as Kalluvathukkal resident Aravindan, for the gruesome murder of his son-in-law, Ragesh, in 2018. The Kollam First Additional District Sessions Judge, P N Vinod, also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on Aravindan.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on April 22, 2018, when Ragesh, aged 33, visited Aravindan's house to meet his wife and child. Aravindan poured formic acid on the victim and then hacked him to death. Key witness testimonies, including that of Ragesh's wife, turned hostile, but the court relied on the dying declaration given before the magistrate to convict the accused.
The case traces back to a financial dispute; Aravindan had promised Ragesh financial support for a business venture, which led to tensions between them. On the fateful day, Ragesh's attempt to take his wife and child back home ended in this tragic act of violence.
