The Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict on Friday on pleas filed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail and challenging the Delhi High Court's order upholding his arrest by the CBI in a corruption case linked to the alleged excise policy scam. The judgement will be delivered by a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan on September 13.
The apex court reserved its judgment on September 5 after hearing arguments from counsels representing Kejriwal and the CBI. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the CBI, objected to Kejriwal for bypassing the trial court and approaching the Delhi High Court directly for bail.
Raju argued that Kejriwal, being an influential personality, follows a different legal path compared to ordinary citizens, who must go to the session court first. He also expressed concerns that if Kejriwal is granted bail, witnesses may turn hostile. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, defending Kejriwal, maintained that Kejriwal is not a threat to society and that his arrest was unnecessary. The Delhi High Court had earlier upheld Kejriwal's arrest as legal, citing sufficient evidence and sanction obtained by the CBI.
