The Supreme Court will deliver its verdict today regarding the pleas filed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail and challenging the Delhi High Court order upholding his arrest by the CBI in the excise policy corruption case. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will deliver the judgement today. The apex court had reserved the verdict on September 5 after hearing counsels representing Kejriwal and CBI.

During the hearing of the case, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing CBI, objected to Kejriwal for bypassing the trial court and directly approaching the Delhi High Court for bail before moving to the apex court.

On August 5, the Delhi High Court upheld the arrest of the Chief Minister as "legal," dismissing Kejriwal's plea challenging his detention. The court highlighted that the CBI had gathered sufficient evidence and obtained sanction before proceeding with further investigation. It emphasized that Kejriwal could potentially influence witnesses, who only came forward after his arrest.

The court noted that Kejriwal, a distinguished recipient of the Magsaysay Award and convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, has significant control and influence over witnesses, which was evidenced by their willingness to testify only after his detention, as highlighted by the special prosecutor.

Kejriwal was initially arrested by the ED on March 21, 2024, in connection with a money laundering probe related to alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy 2021-22. He was later arrested by the CBI on June 26, 2024, while in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate in the same case. (ANI)
