Canadian Resident Arrested in Plot to Attack Jews in NYC

A 20-year-old Pakistani citizen residing in Canada has been detained for plotting a terror attack targeting Jews in New York City. The arrest comes around the anniversary of a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, an avowed supporter of ISIS, aimed to carry out a mass shooting in New York City with the intent of killing as many Jewish people as possible, according to Attorney General Merrick Garland. Garland disclosed this in a statement released on Friday.

Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was apprehended on Wednesday in Ormstown, a small town about 60 km south of Montreal and roughly 20 km from the US-Canada border. He was charged in the Southern District of New York for attempting to provide material support to ISIS.

If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The complaint claims that Khan planned to travel from Canada to New York City for the attack, intending to use automatic and semi-automatic weapons at a Jewish center in Brooklyn. Khan had been posting on social media and using encrypted messaging apps to express his support for ISIS since November of last year, spreading IS propaganda videos and literature.

In one of his messages, Khan declared that the attack would be the largest on U.S. soil since 9/11.

On September 4, Khan tried to reach the US-Canada border as part of his scheme, using three different cars to travel across Canada before being intercepted near Ormstown.
