A police constable and a lifeguard were arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap a one-and-a-half-year-old boy for ransom in Pernem, North Goa, an official said on Sunday.

Constable Nikesh Chari, part of the India Reserve Battalion of the state police, and Sanjay Narvekar, a lifeguard with Drishti Marine, were apprehended in Kargao village on Saturday, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi.

Dalvi explained that the duo tried to kidnap the toddler while he was playing in the gallery of his house on Friday night. They arrived on a two-wheeler and Chari picked up the child. The child's grandfather raised an alarm, which brought neighbors to the scene. While Narvekar managed to flee, Chari was caught.

Narvekar, from Vengurla in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district, was later caught. Both have been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Goa Children's Act. The accused revealed that they intended to extort money from the child's parents, the Deputy SP informed.
