Suspected militants escalated violence in Manipur's Bishnupur district on Friday, firing two rockets that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. The attacks heighten the already tense situation in the Imphal Valley, which has faced drone bombings in recent days.
The Manipur government responded by shutting down schools on September 7, citing safety concerns. The initial rocket attack at 4:30 am damaged structures in Tronglaobi, while a second strike around 3 pm hit the residence of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng, killing an elderly man and injuring five others.
Central security forces are on high alert, as officials point to deficiencies in the current security setup. Human chains were formed by thousands of residents across five districts to protest against the escalating militant attacks. Local officials are urging for more robust measures to protect communities amid the ongoing conflict.
