Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has made a formal request to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking the revocation of the President's Police Medal and the Police Medal awarded to Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Adhikari cited Goyal's alleged inaction regarding the vandalism incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which took place on August 14.
Adhikari, who is also a BJP leader and MLA from Nandigram, extended his appeal to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He raised concerns that the vandalism was intended to destroy evidence related to the rape-murder of a doctor, whose body was discovered in the hospital's seminar hall on August 9.
Adhikari noted that Vineet Goyal, a 1994-batch IPS officer, had received the President's Police Medal in 2013 and the Police Medal earlier this year. The Kolkata Police were investigating the rape-murder case until the Calcutta High Court transferred it to the CBI on August 13, just a day before the vandalism occurred.
