The Trinamool Congress students' wing on Monday suspended senior member Avik Dey amid allegations tying him to the scene of a crime in a state-run hospital where a woman doctor's body was discovered on August 9.

In a statement, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad state president Trinankur Bhattacharya announced Dey's suspension as a post-graduate trainee of SSKM Hospital due to 'certain allegations against him regarding the crime scene following the unfortunate incident at R G Kar'. Bhattacharya emphasized that the suspension would remain effective until the ongoing investigation concluded.

Reports from sections of the media, quoting unnamed doctors, suggested a resemblance between Dey and a person in a red shirt captured on video at the crime scene. However, Kolkata Police clarified that the individual in question was their fingerprint expert, not Dey. Despite these claims, the debate over the identity of the person continues. Dey has denied being at the hospital at the time of the incident. Bhattacharya stated that no further decisions would be made about Dey until the CBI investigation concluded, as the video fueled allegations of crucial evidence tampering post-crime.
