The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the West Bengal government's plea challenging the Calcutta High Court's order granting bail to Sayan Lahiri, an organizer of the August 27 protest march to the state secretariat. The rally was staged in response to the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor.
A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra stated that there was prima facie evidence to grant bail in this case. On Friday, the Calcutta High Court had approved Lahiri's release, leading to his discharge from police custody on Saturday.
Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, an unregistered student group, was one of the main organizers of the August 27 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally, which turned violent. The Kolkata Police arrested Lahiri on the same evening. The incident has fueled nationwide outrage over the tragic fate of the young doctor.
