Junior doctors in Kolkata staged a protest calling for the immediate resignation of Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Rupesh Kumar, engaged with the demonstrators on Monday.
"We've enforced Section 163 BNS and Section 144 CRPC to prevent gatherings. A delegation can meet the senior officer and submit their demands in writing," Kumar informed ANI. Meanwhile, the CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch detained Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, along with three others for alleged corruption and financial misconduct, sources told ANI.
Dr. Ghosh was already under investigation following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. Alongside Dr. Ghosh, vendors Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara, as well as Afsar Ali, Additional Security to Dr. Ghosh, were also arrested, sources added.
The protests extended to various states with doctors demanding justice for the victim and better security for healthcare workers. The case has intensified political tensions with the BJP urging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resign. Following a High Court order, the investigation has been transferred to the CBI.
