Japan's Defence Ministry on Friday sought a record 8.5 trillion yen (USD 59 billion) budget for the next year, aiming to strengthen deterrence against China's growing threat in the southwestern islands. The focus is on unmanned weapons and AI due to a shrinking population affecting troop numbers.

This request marks the third year of Japan's aggressive five-year military buildup plan under the current security strategy. The plan aims to spend 43 trillion yen (USD 297 billion) by 2027, doubling its annual military expenditure and making it the third-largest military spender globally after the US and China.

The ministry's request was approved during a meeting on Friday and will be submitted to the Finance Ministry for December negotiations. The request also covers long-range missile capabilities, new destroyers, and combat drones, responding to China's actions in disputed waters and North Korea's hypersonic missile developments.
