Former Red Brigade Member Arrested in Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires police have detained Leonardo Bertulazzi, a former member of the far-left Red Brigade, following an Italian judiciary request. Bertulazzi is accused of several crimes, including kidnapping, and lost his refugee status under President Javier Milei's administration. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the arrest.
Buenos Aires police have detained Leonardo Bertulazzi, a former Red Brigade member sought by Italian authorities for crimes related to the far-left guerrilla group, the Argentine government announced on Thursday.
Bertulazzi faced accusations of kidnapping and criminal association and had lived in Argentina for years as a refugee. However, he lost this status under the ultra-liberal administration of President Javier Milei. 'Bertulazzi is responsible for crimes that undermined democratic values and the lives of many victims,' stated the Argentinian government.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni applauded the arrest, pointing out that Bertulazzi had already been sentenced in Italy to 27 years in prison for terrorism-related activities. The Red Brigade was notorious in the 1970s and 1980s for various high-profile crimes, including the kidnapping and murder of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro.
