The Kremlin has issued a strong statement contesting serious accusations made by France against Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, suggesting that if unsubstantiated, they could be viewed as an attempt to restrict communication freedoms.

Russian-born billionaire Durov was arrested in France over the weekend in connection with alleged crimes including child exploitation, drug trafficking, and fraudulent transactions on the platform. Reuters was unable to reach Durov's legal representation for comment.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Russia is prepared to offer support to Durov due to his Russian citizenship while acknowledging the complication of his dual citizenship status in France and the UAE. Peskov warned that the lack of serious evidence could imply an attempt to curb communication freedoms and questioned the non-political nature of the arrest claimed by French President Emmanuel Macron.
