The new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—are intended to bring governance and benefits directly to the people, boosting administrative efficiency and access to services. Shah emphasized the government's commitment to creating abundant opportunities for the residents of Ladakh.
Ladakh became a Union Territory following the bifurcation of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019. On the same day, Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was abrogated. As a Union Territory, Ladakh is directly administered by the union home ministry.
