Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday reinforced his government's zero-tolerance stance on crimes against women, emphasizing that "drastic action" would be taken. He commended the state police for their prompt responses in such cases, setting an example for others.
"When incidents like rape occur in Assam, police take immediate action with no compromises. Our policy is one of zero tolerance," Sarma told reporters.
Referring to recent cases, including a gangrape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing where the main accused died during an escape attempt, and another in Tezpur involving molestation, Sarma asserted that strict measures are being implemented. He stated that rape cases surged post-Lok Sabha elections but have since declined.
"Despite the post-Lok Sabha election spike in cases, we've observed a reduction, and we'll continue stringent actions to instill fear of the law among perpetrators," affirmed Sarma.
