German police announced on Saturday that an unknown assailant is still at large hours after a deadly stabbing attack at a festival in Solingen left three people dead and eight injured. Five of the injured are in serious condition, according to an updated statement from the police.
The attack took place at approximately 9:40 p.m. (1940 GMT) on Friday, where the suspect used a knife to assault multiple people. Such fatal attacks are rare in Germany, prompting the government to consider stricter regulations on knives in public spaces.
The stabbing happened during a festival celebrating Solingen's 650th anniversary in North Rhine-Westphalia. Authorities have since cancelled the remainder of the weekend event. Interior Minister Herbert Reul visited the scene on Saturday, confirming the attack was a targeted act but refraining from speculating on the shooter’s motive. A police spokesperson noted that no further details about the perpetrator could be provided as the investigation continues.
