The Odisha government has announced stringent measures following liquor-related deaths in Ganjam district. Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that 217 illegal country liquor joints identified across the state would be demolished.

Amid political pressure, Harichandan revealed plans for a revenue divisional commissioner (RDC) probe into the fatalities at Chikiti, where two people died and 13 others are undergoing treatment. The issue was hotly debated in the Odisha Assembly, disrupting proceedings for two days.

The state has committed to a zero-tolerance policy against illicit liquor. Harichandan visited the hospital, where the injured are receiving free treatment, and promised intensified enforcement efforts. Eight people have been arrested in connection with the illegal manufacturing and sale of the toxic liquor.
