Democratic Progressive Azad Party Chief, Ghulam Nabi Azad, on Thursday highlighted the importance of independent candidates in the forthcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. Speaking at a public rally in Anantnag, Azad called for the success of independent candidates, emphasizing their critical democratic role.

"Democracy means a system where everyone has the right to become Chief Minister. Some people from my party have left, but they are good people. I appeal that all independent candidates should be made successful," he stated. Citing past examples, Azad recalled, "The government of Mufti Sahab and mine was formed with the support of 22 independent candidates. Who says that independent candidates have no role in democracy?"

Earlier in August, former minister Taj Mohiuddin announced his resignation from Azad's party, signaling a return to Congress. Meanwhile, public figures like Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah voiced concerns about independents aiding BJP. Omar Abdullah warned of BJP's potential post-poll alliances. The elections will be the first since the abrogation of Article 370, set to take place over three phases with results on October 8.
