Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has called for legislation requiring convictions in sexual assault cases within 50 days. This urgent plea comes in the wake of the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Banerjee highlighted that while protests erupted over the recent tragedy, 900 more such cases occurred across the country during the same period. He urged state governments to lobby the Centre for robust anti-rape laws that ensure rapid trials and severe punishments.

In a social media post, Banerjee underscored the severity of the situation, stating, "With 90 rapes reported daily – 4 every hour and 1 every 15 minutes – decisive action is imperative. We need strong laws, not empty promises. State governments must act urgently to push for a comprehensive anti-rape law. Anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective. WAKE UP INDIA!"
