West Bengal Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya on Sunday demanded the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to strengthen their case in the RG Kar rape and murder incident, ensuring that the perpetrator faces the death penalty. The TMC leader led a protest in Kolkata over the tragic case.

Chandrima Bhattacharya told ANI that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed the Trinamool Mahila Congress on August 28 to stage demonstrations on September 1 across all blocks. Bhattacharya emphasized the need for the CBI to provide updates and build a compelling case for capital punishment. Additionally, she revealed that the West Bengal government has called a special Assembly session on September 2 and 3 to propose a bill advocating capital punishment for such crimes.

'Our government aims to introduce a provision for capital punishment, presenting a bill to the President through the Governor,' Bhattacharya stated, expressing hope for its approval. The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College has incited widespread protests in West Bengal and beyond.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, has driven doctors to protest nationwide, demanding justice and stringent security measures for healthcare professionals.

The case has also sparked political tension, with the BJP calling for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation. Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the investigation has been transferred from local police to the CBI. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
