Finance Secretary T V Somanathan has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary by the government for a tenure of two years, beginning August 30. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its approval on Saturday.
Somanathan, a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has succeeded Rajiv Gauba, who concludes his unprecedented five-year term this month. Somanathan's career highlights include serving as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office and Expenditure Secretary.
A distinguished bureaucrat, Somanathan holds a PhD in economics. He has held various positions, including roles at the World Bank and as Managing Director of Chennai Metro Corporation. Meanwhile, the government is expected to appoint a new Union Home Secretary soon as incumbent Ajay Kumar Bhalla completes his tenure on August 22.
